Ex-military man to run 500km in 5 days
As if running to Mount Kosciuszko in 2022 was not enough, Rodney “Rocket” Cottam is pushing himself to run further and quicker this year to raise funds for Invictus Australia.
Last year, Momentum Media introduced you to Mr Cottam, a former military man and a regional sales manager at non-bank lender Resimac.
Mr Cottam – who was involved in a motorbike accident that left him with a long-term prognosis caused by spinal nerve damage called brachial plexus palsy – ran 350km to Mount Kosciuszko.
He raised over $41,000 for veteran support charity Invictus Australia, which Momentum Media proudly supports.
After completing this gruelling challenge, Mr Cottam hinted at participating in more challenges in 2023.
Momentum Media backs running for resilience… and a cause
When ex-military man Rodney “Rocket” Cottam was in a serious motor vehicle accident almost two decades ago that left him permanently paralysed in his left arm, he turned to running to build his strength and resilience. Now, he has partnered with Momentum Media to undertake a punishing running challenge to raise funds for a cause close to his heart.
Mr Cottam’s philosophy is simple. While our first instinct is to identify a problem and be clouded by negativity, he rejoices in finding solutions and focusing on what is within his circle of control.
“In my instance I couldn’t control what happened, or the end result of my accident. So, there’s absolutely no reason for me to focus on it,” he asserted to Momentum Media.
“All I can focus on is moving forward and figuring out how I adapt to it, get through it, and change the way I normally would do things.”
What doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger
What doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger.
Resilience is an essential trait for surviving what life can throw at us while also enabling us to persevere in achieving our ambitions.
But while we know what it means to be resilient, taking steps to become more resilient is less familiar.
For Resimac’s Rodney Cottam, however, resilience is a measured process that has been shaped by his experience in the military, a permanent injury and running over 100 kilometres for charity.
And, as he tells Sam Nicols, resilience can be built by anyone willing to embrace it.
